We often forget that the most important and lasting relationship we would ever have is the one we have with ourselves. This relationship lasts from birth to death and serves as a foundation for every other relationship as well as a fundamental aspect of our overall well-being.

Irrespective of the kind of relationship you will have with any other person whether with your parents, siblings, significant other, colleagues or friends, at one point in life, you will be left with one person and that is YOU
In a few days, it's going to be valentine's day. Historically, valentine's day is a day set aside for love to be celebrated romantically. But today, I would like us to shift focus from the usual way of celebrating valentine romantically with our significant others to ourselves.

Whether you are married or not, in a relationship or not and even if you intend to celebrate valentine with your significant other, let's talk about Why You Should Love Yourself More On Valentine's Day. After all, you can't give what you don't have can you? neither can you pour from an empty cup.

And so, without further ado, let's dive into five powerful tips on why you should love yourself more on valentine's day.

FIVE TIPS ON WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE YOURSELF MORE ON VALENTINE'S DAY

1. YOU HAVE JUST YOU TO TAKE CARE OF YOU: When all else fails, you are left with you to take care of you. Relationships come and go, but the one you have with yourself will always remain. Reflect on your achievements, qualities, successes and strengths. Think about how far you've come and all the challenges you've overcome and say to yourself "I deserve some self-love and pampering' and treat yourself with some kindness, respect, admiration and empathy that you would give to a very close friend.

2. IT SETS THE FOUNDATION FOR HEALTHIER RELATIONSHIPS: When you learn to treat yourself right - with respect, kindness, love and empathy, you expect nothing less from others. You set the tone for how others should treat you. And because you now understand your worth, you build and maintain stronger, meaningful and purposeful relationships. Loving and accepting yourself for who you are equips you to love and accept others. You can't give what you don't have.

3. IT HELPS YOU APPRECIATE YOUR OWN COMPANY: Too many people find it difficult to spend some time alone and enjoy their own company especially on days such as valentine's day. But learning to spend time alone, being comfortable and enjoying your own company is a powerful form of self-love that no one can take from you. So on valentine's day, treat yourself with some solo activities you love doing like reading, cooking, writing and so on. Treat yourself too with your favourite delicacies, cookies, chocolate or wine. It's incredibly fulfilling when you learn to enjoy your own company.

4. IT GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE SELF-GRATITUDE: When you reflect on your past successes, achievements, how far you have come and the challenges you've overcome to get to where you are now, it gives you the opportunity to be grateful to yourself and to God.

5. IT HELPS YOU COMBAT EXTERNAL VALIDATION: Society equates valentine's day with being in a romantic relationship - no doubt it is meant for that - but this can put unnecessary pressure on singles and make them feel isolated. But when you learn to focus and celebrate what you have - your individuality, strength and resilience - over what you don't have - being in a romantic relationship - you take the pressure off you.

Even if you spend some time with your significant other on valentine's day, take a moment and celebrate you for who you are and how far you have come in life. No one will do it better than you.
