According to the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu "Mastering yourself is true power."
I bet if asked if you would like to be a powerful person, the answer would be a resounding yes!
In one way or the other, we all want to be powerful or be associated with perceived powerful persons.
But have you ever wondered or asked yourself what it takes to be a powerful person or what makes a powerful person?
To the society, money is power, politics is power, fame is power and physical might or strength is power. For some, being deceptive, a bully, a manipulator, an intimidator, a threat to life, a gangster, an alcoholic, a drug addict, a sexual narcist is a form of power. Some have resorted to doing the unimaginable - killing fellow human, integrity sold - especially in the political space -, conscience sold and other atrocities that ordinarily they wouldn't do as a means to acquire or retain power. For some, the use of weaponry for the sole aim of intimidation is a form of acquiring power.
Why these may be some form of acquiring power or true in certain aspects to entail what makes a powerful person, beyond these is the real power no one can take from you and that power comes from within.
Money can be taken away or vanished, political power can be taken away and physical strength can diminish. weapons of intimidation of any kind won't last for long and can be taken away but the power from within stays with you throughout life and even beyond.
SO WHAT MAKES A POWERFUL PERSON? THE POWER THAT NO ONE CAN TAKE FROM YOU
1. ENJOY YOUR OWN COMPANY: A person who learns to enjoy his or her own company or spending time alone is one who has stopped seeking validation from people. One who has a vision, a goal and a dream to pursue and taking action towards realizing his/her set goals and dreams. This person has a direction in life. This person's happiness is not dependent on others. One of the healthiest and powerful thing a person can do is to learn how to be okay by themselves. This way, you can't be easily tossed around by the wind or swayed by people's opinions. Being able to enjoy your own company and spending time alone stems from enhanced self-love and self-discovery.

Self-discipline is a skill developed and strengthened over time by those who desire it and want to succeed in life. It is about perseverance and commitment. The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is self-discipline. To thrive and flourish in life, you need to be self-disciplined. Self-discipline is crucial for the realization of goals, a fulfilled life, successful career, over all health and so much more. Motivation alone is not enough to keep you going but discipline does. The power in self-discipline is the ability to control your thoughts, push yourself past procrastination, low motivation and days of frustration. People who possess self-discipline are better equipped to accomplish much more than those who do not.
Self-discipline is the courage to stay the course, push through the pain and resist the temptation to give up.

Independence is not just a concept but a way of life and a journey that we must all embark on if we must find our own voice and our true self. Being independent does not mean you can't be vulnerable or seek help when needed. We all need each other to thrive and flourish in life.
To be independent is to be able to to learn to walk life's journey and into beautiful things on your own. It is being able to find your path, live this path and mentally relying on yourself to deal with and pull through life's challenges
The power in independence is being able to trust yourself, make personal decisions and in the process find your path and your voice.
8. BE OF SERVICE TO HUMANITY AND TO GOD: To become a powerful person, you've got to be of service to humanity in the life style that suits you - your values and purpose in life. When you make life all about you and no one else, trust me, you'd see yourself just struggling to survive because all you have is meant for your survival only. In my book, The Beauty and Power of A Purposeful Life I had made mention of the three levels of life analyzed by Samuel Fulkerson which are survival, success and significance. To thrive and flourish in life, we must get to the level of significance else every other level is just struggles. And to get to the significance stage, you just have to be of service to humanity even in your own little way.
There are so many ways to be of service to humanity and these include, being a mentor to someone, lend a helping hand, serve in your community, give to the motherless, the needy. You could even volunteer to serve in a program or an organization where you could be of service to as many people as possible.
To be able to be of service to humanity, ensure your service aligns with your values and life's purpose. This make is much easier for you to be of service else instead of making you powerful, it will make you feel the opposite effect. It will drain you and make you feel like you are struggling instead of thriving.
According to Joyce Meyers, we should all have this mentality of I am here to serve and I believe we are called to serve in one way or the other either at our work places, business places, in our communities and wherever we find ourselves. Life is not always about the money like the salaries we receive in our jobs but more of the service we give in our work and other places we may find ourselves.
Life is not always about receiving but ore of giving. It is said that it is more blessed to give than to receive. The greatest joy we can ever feel or experience is serving and giving to others. The greatest leaders are those with service mentality and not those who just want to boss people around.
. SERVICE TO GOD: Service in your local church or religious settings. Serving in local church helps advance the kingdom of God and in turn also enables you to be of service to humanity as well. Take for instance the ushers, who in usher in members or the children teachers who teach the ways of God in the church. These are services to God and to humanity.
Find a unit in your church where you can be of service. We sometimes miss the blessings even greater blessings when all we think about is what others can do for us and not what we can do for others. Greatness in God's kingdom is measured by nothing else but our willingness to serve.
The power of service to God and humanity is that it brings with it growth, fulfilment, joy from within, transforms lives and the society at large.
These powers mentioned above consist of your mind-set, character, self-worth, discipline, true knowledge of things and of who you are. No one and nothing can take these powers from you because this is who you are.
They are not influenced by outside forces but come from within. You are not easily shaken or swayed by what people say or do to you. You are not defined by the words or actions of people but by these powers from within.
